Pipe Lasers

In pipe installation, precision isn’t optional - it’s critical. Whether for sewer, stormwater, or drainage infrastructure, achieving the correct grade and alignment ensures proper flow, prevents costly rework, and avoids long-term performance issues.

Pipe lasers are the industry’s go-to solution for this task, providing a fast, accurate, and highly visible reference line in even the toughest trench environments.

This article covers:

• What a pipe laser is and how it works.
• Common applications in civil construction.
• Benefits of laser-guided pipe laying.
• Safety and setup considerations.
• How United Rentals supports you from hire to calibration.

What Is a Pipe Laser?

A pipe laser is a specialist construction tool that projects a highly visible beam along a trench to guide accurate pipe installation to a set gradient. Think of it as a “laser chalk line” that ensures every pipe section is positioned with the correct fall and alignment.

Pipe lasers are widely used in sewer and stormwater installations, drainage works requiring precise falls, subbase construction where controlled slope is critical, and long-distance or complex grade pipe runs.

Why Use a Pipe Laser?

Laying pipes without a laser is slower, more labour-intensive, and far more prone to error. A pipe laser makes the process faster, safer, and more reliable by ensuring consistent alignment across the entire trench.

The key benefits include:

• Consistent fall to guarantee proper drainage performance.
• Increased productivity to speed up alignment and installation.
• Reduced human error, avoiding costly corrections and rework.
• Long-distance accuracy, maintaining precision measurements even across extended trench runs.

Why Use United Rentals Pipe Lasers?

United Rentals' pipe lasers are engineered for maximum performance, visibility, and durability in demanding site conditions.

They feature Green Beam Technology, which is up to four times more visible than red beams, even in bright sunlight. Their long-range performance extends up to 150m, with remote control operation available at distances up to 200m. The rugged aluminium housing is waterproof, shock-resistant, and built trench-ready.

For ease of use, features include a clear-angle display for fast grade adjustments, left/right steering via remote beamline control, and a long-life, top-loading battery pack to keep operations running without interruption.

Setup and Operation

Using a pipe laser is straightforward. The unit is positioned in the starting pit or first pipe section, the required grade or slope is set, and the beam is aligned with the target point. Each pipe section is then laid using the beam dot as a precise alignment guide.

If ground conditions change mid-run, real-time grade adjustments can be made using the remote control to keep the installation accurate and on track.

Safety Considerations

Pipe lasers are safe to use when standard PPE and site procedures are followed. Operators should wear a hard hat, high-visibility vest, gloves, steel-capped boots, and eye protection. The unit must be kept stable and secure during use, and workers should never look directly into the beam.

Our laser equipment range complies with all regulatory requirements in Australia and New Zealand, so you can be sure you are hiring the best possible equipment.

Calibration and Support

Accuracy is only as good as the last calibration. That’s why United Rentals offers calibration checks at all branches, ensuring every pipe laser performs within tolerance.

In-house experts and branch teams can also provide guidance on best practice setup, integrating lasers with trench shoring and excavation safety equipment, and troubleshooting issues on site.

When to Get Professional Support

Professional input is essential when:

• Working on long or complex grades.
• Laying pipes in difficult trench conditions.
• Coordinating with trench shoring or confined space equipment.
