Containers provide a premium view of cliff diving’s global stage
While the towering 27m and 21m diving platforms stole the show, two shipping containers gave spectators prime viewing points at the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series finale in Auckland.
The scale of the Red Bull event required a robust, temporary infrastructure on the waterfront setting around Wynyard Quarter with two Royal Wolf containers used as viewing platforms beside the diving platforms.
Scott Wallace from Marvel Experiences says an essential part of the site was to create an elevated platform for the Friends of Red Bull area to provide a premium viewing experience for guests.
“The key advantage Royal Wolf brought was an existing container product that we were able to modify to meet our specific needs on the site. We worked with them to develop a solution that made the viewing platforms safe and practical for spectators.”
The viewing platform solution was made up of two 20-foot containers, with platforms and barriers secured on top as a viewing deck, and stairway access for guests.
“The containers also worked well as a viewing platform because they connected and aligned with the whole concept of the elevated diving boards,” says Mr Wallace.
Global expectations met
After six stops around the world, the Tamaki Makaurau / Auckland cliff diving event was the series finale.
The two-day event saw 24 of the world’s best cliff divers fight to claim the King Kahekili trophy with the men diving from a 27m high platform and women from 21m up.
One of the key challenge was to ensure the Auckland leg lived up to the previous events set in countries including Bosnia and Herzegovina, France, and Japan.
The spectacular diving towers designed by Maori Ta Moko artist Graham Tipene were the centre-piece of the event which was watched by tens of thousands on site and hundreds of thousands global via a live-broadcast.
